Everyone says I’m a bad girl. They’re only partly right—I don’t let fear rule me, and I certainly don’t care what people think. But I draw the line at sleeping with the enemy. As the daughter of Briar’s head hockey coach, I’d be vilified if I hooked up with a player from a rival team.
And that’s who Jake Connelly is. Harvard’s star forward is arrogant, annoying, and too attractive for his own good. But fate is cruel—I require his help to secure a much-coveted internship, and the sexy jerk isn’t making it easy for me.
I need Connelly to be my fake boyfriend.
For every fake date…he wants a real one.
Which means this bad girl is in big trouble. Nothing good can come from sneaking around with Jake Connelly. My father would kill me, my friends will revolt, and my post-college career is on the line. But while it’s getting harder and harder to resist Jake’s oozing sex appeal and cocky grin, I refuse to fall for him.
That’s the one risk I’m not willing to take.
A sexy standalone novel from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy. THE RISK takes you back to the world of hot hockey players, feisty heroines, bro banter, and steamy scenes…
Dare I say it, but I think I loved this book a teensy bit more than The Chase and I LOVED The Chase. There was just something about Brenna’s friendship with Summer, her spunk and feistiness, that intrigued me and Elle certainly delivered on her story. If I were twenty and she was real I’d pester her until she let me into her inner circle. With Brenna and Jake, she’s created one of the hottest chemistry between “foes”. If her friends find out she’s consorting with the enemy, well, she just won’t think about that…one of those things that makes her unique.
The story centers around the weeks leading up to the finals of the college hockey season where all signs point to Briar and Harvard facing each other in the playoff. This also the time that Brenna is trying to land an internship that would put her firmly on her career path. Jake becomes a necessary evil and their fake relationship blooms into so.much.more.
Seriously, the chemistry between these two is palpable. Theirs is a relationship of flirting, teasing and some amazing foreplay. Even if it’s in secret, they become each others’ champion. But really all that matters is how they make each other feel – about themselves. You might think Jake Connelly doesn’t need anyone to bolster his confidence, but he’s disappointed by family and friends alike. Brenna is no doubt a spirited young woman, but she’s vulnerable and Jake treats her with great care. Brenna’s strained relationship with her father is further tested, but he’s there for her in his unique way and they are given the opportunity to create a new and improved relationship.
Summer and the hockey crew at Briar University provides much comic relief, especially Mike Hollis the wanna be girlfriend that Summer and Brenna unleash on him. Elle Kennedy showcases that she has a pulse on college hockey romance and with the Briar U series, created another fantastic addition to the world of hockey romance.

I’ve been jonesing for this book for a while. And it was certainly worth the wait. Kennedy got it, for a lack of a better word, right. The chemistry is spot on. There’s some great banter – Jakey, LOL, intelligent exchanges, and the angst is…well, perfect. From the last book, I expected Jake to be a douche canoe. And I was pleasantly surprised to see all of the layers and dimensions the author gave him. And Brenna…what a magnificent ballbuster. And once they got together? Yeah, nothing short of amazing. But I think my favorite part was when she dug deep and gave us a truly evolved and dynamic story.
Every time I read one a book by this author, I feel transported back to college because she has a pulse on the atmosphere and behaviors, let alone I’ve learned SO MUCH about hockey. I totes respect all of the research she’s done to make this book as authentic as possible.
I dare say that this is my favorite couple. They’re written so well that you can’t help but throw a fist into the air when all the stars align. Now I’m dying to know who she’ll write next!!! *bites nails*
