May Did you hear the one about the girl who walks into a bar and catches her live-in lover kissing someone else? No? You’re the only one in town who missed it. Luckily Alec is there to wrap me up in strong arms and carry me out the door before things get too ugly. And that’s not all Alec is good at. Our unexpected chemistry makes him the perfect rebound guy.
I should know better than to hook up with my rival’s little sister, but the fiery look in May’s eyes really turns my crank. She needs cheering up, and I’m just the guy for the job. It’s not like I’ll fall in love. Not even after a string of scorching hot trysts, and the realization that we’re good at the same things: wild nights and familial disappointment. I don’t do love, never have, never will. So this is the perfect arrangement, for both of us.
Nobody would approve, but nobody has to know…
Sometimes you fall for Mr. Right. And sometimes for Mr. Right Now…
Every single Sarina Bowen book grabs me in one way or another. Whether I find myself smiling, swooning, sad or a little *smitten*, I’m always affected. As with most deeply affecting read, they are character driven and Sarina Bowen is a master at this. She shows them in their entirety from the inside out. Her stories touch on many issues, social and personal. With Speakeasy, we are left contemplating addiction as we venture into May Shipleys’ recovery and a new found “friendship” with Gin Mill owner Alec Rossi.
May was always one of the intriguing secondary characters in the Shipley clan, deeply caring and deeply cared for. May spends a good amount of time dissecting herself, forced to keep her feelings bottled up lest she alienate her best friend. She loves who she loves, but has mostly been smart about her relationships and it’s heartbreaking to see her heartbroken. She is about to undergo yet another life altering event and Alec steps in and offer her support and friendship she had no idea was lacking in her life. As a thinker, when she gets caught up in the whirlwind that is Alec Rossi, she’s waxes and wanes between her intuition and over thinking.
Oh what a whirlwind Alec is. He quickly wormed his way into my heart, errrr, May’s heart. Their relationship is delightful and delicious, the pheromones simply ooze from the page. He accepts May in all her complexities exactly as she is. He faces his own personal battles, and his desire for May complicates how he lives his life, but this good time party boy finds himself in a situation he’s never been in (pssst…starts with the letter L) and he rolls with it.
Sarina manages (always!!) to strike a perfect balance of angst and optimism. Speakeasy spoke to me on so many levels. The highlights I made while reading range from the mundane, the silly and the profound. The story is raw and beautiful and worthy of all of the Alec snaps in the shape of one amazing read!! 5 ++Stars
