The final book in the Something in the Way series, a love saga.

Manning and I have what happily-ever-after is made of . . .
A home he built us on the unshakeable foundation we fought for.
A life of laughter carved out of heartache and betrayal.
A love story to stand the test of time.

But between a trust that can’t be broken, joy that can’t be bridled, and passion that would scorch the sun, the empty spaces are becoming more and more difficult to ignore . . .
Fears that keep Manning up at night as he slips from our bed.
Our complicated relationship with a man he respects and one I don't know how to forgive.
And a sprawling, beautiful home with one small room I'm afraid I'll never be able to fill.

Manning and I have what happily-ever-after is made of . . .
But I'll beg the heavens for just one thing more.

My rating: 6 of 5 stars

We have all those fantasies that when we have been given the end of a series, that we’ll maybe get just one more. This doesn’t happen often, but for Lake Kaplan and Manning Sutter, I didn’t dare think it. I was content because I had to be. Well, Ms Jessica Hawkins turned my literary world upside down when she announced that Lake and Manning weren’t done, they had more to share and she was abiding by their wishes and giving us their story – their beginning. I must say that Lake + Manning is the most perfect conclusion to the 6 star series, this EPIC love story.

Their is absolutely nothing more I could have wanted from this story. Everything I didn’t even realize I questioned or wanted, is addressed. This is a story about love and forgiveness, about how hopes that have been dashed are reignited by faith. Where family bonds once destroyed are rekindled. Where love built on a preconceived notion of what we offer each other is tested, and where the ultimate profession of love is finally affirmed. It’s pretty simple, A man love a woman and a woman loves a man, and while it takes what seems like a lifetime to rectify, two people who are born to be together, finally just are.

Hawkins shows us that the nitty gritty of everyday life even among two people who have overcome so much to be together is not glamorous, and their struggles are real and compounded by what seemed like the universe trying to keep them a part. What these two offer each other is pure unconditional love. But while they have endured so much to come together, mistakes are still made and doubt has a way of creeping in. Hawkins writing is utterly flawless. I’ve loved everything I’ve read from her, but there is something extra special about this series. It seems that that inspired by these characters, she’s poetic and profound beyond the normal contemporary romance. More than a dozen times (in this book alone) she left me with tears in my eyes:

“Above our heads, the sky moved and rearranged. It couldn’t have been a more perfect way to start forever together. Perhaps our timing had always been right, and like Manning, I needed to let go and trust that in the end, we’d get everything we were supposed to.”

This part of the story actually brought to light some of Charles Kaplans, Lake’s father’s better qualities (his sarcasm). Also, Tiffanys’ role in Lakes’ and Mannings’ story starts to make sense. She is the conduit, a test for the to endure. While I stopped hating her , I let her vapid qualities entertain me. And once again, Val and Corbin are there to provide friendship and support.

I’ve hardly finished my first read through and I’ve embarked on a re-read. I’m honored to have found this story and I encourage every romance reader to pick up this series, to treat yourself to an EPIC love story that will take your emotions for a bit of a ride. This series is a read of a lifetime and reminded me why I became a rabid reader and *fan girl* in the first place. What’s more though is the unity that series has inspired among Jessica Hawkins fans. For me it’s an unparalleled experience in the romance reader world.

About Jessica Hawkins

Jessica Hawkins grew up between the purple mountains and under the endless sun of Palm Springs, California. She studied international business at Arizona State University and has also lived in Costa Rica and New York City. To her, the most intriguing fiction is forbidden, and that's what you'll find in her stories. Currently, she resides wherever her head lands, which is often the unexpected (but warm) keyboard of her trusty MacBook.
