About WHISKEY SECRETS (Whiskey and Lies #1)
Sparks fly between a former cop-turned-bartender and his new innkeeper in the first installment of a Montgomery Ink spin-off series from NYT Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan.
Dare Collins is a man who knows his whiskey and women—or at least that’s what he tells himself. When his family decides to hire on a new innkeeper for the inn above his bar and restaurant, he’s more than reluctant. Especially when he meets the new hire. But he’ll soon find that he has no choice but to work with this city girl and accept her new ideas and the burning attraction between them.
Kenzie Owens left her old life and an abusive relationship behind her—or so she thought. She figures she’ll be safe in Whiskey, Pennsylvania but after one look at her new boss, Dare Collins, she might still be in danger, or at least her heart. And when her past catches up with her despite her attempts to avoid it, it’s more than her heart on the line. This time, it might mean her life.

Whiskey Secrets, the first in Carrie Ann Ryan’s Whiskey and Lies series is also the first book be her that I’ve read. How is that possible? Seems I’ve been missing out on some fine examples of slightly tortured Alpha-men and I’m very glad that’s been rectified.
Kenzie is a women looking to get a fresh start on life after divorcing her all too controlling husband. her new life brings her directly into the life of one Dare Collins, a man focused on spending time with his young son and working in his family hotel/pub. The spark between them is born out of distrust and Kenzie’s need to conceal her pasts and Cares need to guard his heart. The attraction between them is immediate, but the relationship is a slow burn.
I love that the characters connect early, but start out on what seems to be opposing sides. Dare is not quick to trust but he allows their chemistry to bloom. Kenzie’s past is heartbreaking not having anyone that she can count on, and Ryan aptly captures Kenzie’s fears of self-doubt and trusting her own judgment. Her own family isn’t on her side and we see how she could so easily backslide, but she also has a strength that comes from deep self respect. She’s a very likable character and great match for Dare as the two compliment each other and provide strength and backup. The story is well paced as Kenzies pasts is revealed and she and Dare bond. There’s some pretty intense moments where I caught myself saying “Oh crap!” using my outside voice.
I’m very glad that I’ve finally read a book by Carrie Ann Ryan and with many recommendations from friends I look forward to reading the entire Montgomery series.
