I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with the nanny.

When my wife left, she took the illusion of happiness with her, and I’ve been caught in a free fall ever since. For nine long months, I’ve been fighting to figure out how to be a single dad, how to be alone.

For nine long months, I’ve been failing.

When Hannah walked through the door, I took my first breath since I’d found myself on my own. She slipped into our lives effortlessly, showing me what I’ve been missing all these years. Because Hannah made me smile when I thought I’d packed the notion of happiness away with my wedding album.

She was only supposed to be the nanny, but she’s so much more.

The day my wife left should have been the worst day of my life, but it wasn’t. It was when Hannah walked away, taking my heart with her.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Even as much of a Staci Hart fan that I am, I had no idea that ATTL is a sort of follow-up to one of my absolutely most favorite books of all time A Thousand Letters (see my review my review .) The minute it hit me, about a page in, I was almost giddy. I couldn’t wait to catch up with Charlie Parker as he was one of my favorite characters, and indeed a hero with regards to Elliott in ATL. However, you can read this book as a standalone but I recommend you read A Thousand Letters first (Just in case you didn’t get it I think it’s simply AMAZING!)

So my initial excitement about this book was the scenario of a single father and a nanny. It’s probably one of my favorite tropes as there is almost always the promise of unrequited love, another favorite. From the moment Charlie Parker smiles down at Hannah, my heart began pounding, and it never let up.

The premise you can glean from the blurb: Charlie is single father who loves his two children Sam and Maven with all that he is. But he’s failing to provide the daily care they need. He needs a nanny stat, and the agency sends him Hannah. Hannah is everything he’s never known and the two form a partnership with Hannah changing the entire atmosphere around her. The black cloud that hung over the house begins to lift. Feelings stronger then an “employer to employee” status form which seems very natural in the case of the care giving she is his young children. She’s a breath of very fresh air and it doesn’t take long for Charlie to want what he thinks he can’t have.

Hannah must be one of the most endearing characters ever. She is the very embodiment of a maternal woman; nurturing, patient, and with nothing but good intentions. What she feels for Charlie is new to her and while she understands her role in the household there are reasons she is wary about her pull to Charlie. It’s wonderful to see her influence on Charlie as he begins to embrace his role as a father, to trust his instincts and reevaluate what his career means in the grand scheme of things. While Hannah isn’t left without choices, she forced to make some that threaten her livelihood and happiness.

A Little To Late captures the despair of Charlie’s situation as he must face down his wife Mary (a character who is quite frankly a selfish and manipulative B*tch), admit to what he wants, and reconciles with himself that he deserves happiness. He really struggles with how to provide for his family and with being there too. As with everything by Staci Hart, the writing is impeccable. I never have a hard time grasping her characters, I can always feel them pretty much right away. There’s just enough back story on Hannah to understand her family background. She’s drifting through life a bit but she recognizes what she’s great at. Charlie needs to find his center and his character really grows throughout the story. Another 5 Star ##MustRead recommendation for Staci Hart!

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.
