When a marriage of convenience turns into the passion of a lifetime…..
Holden “Havoc” Thompson
My job as the leader of the Moonshine Task Force is my life. I eat, breathe, and sleep it. The men under my command mean the world to me. Knowing they count on my guidance has kept my demons at bay for longer than I care to admit.
The control I have over myself is an iron fist that sometimes threatens to squeeze the life out of me. What I want more than anything is to live again – let go of the hurt smothering every bit of light I have in this darkness.
I don’t expect it to come in the form of a Moonshiner’s daughter needing my protection.
My whole life has been defined by who my family is. In the state of Alabama, we’re number one with a target on our backs. The danger and prestige isn’t for me. I don’t care about the money, and I care too much about the families we’ve ruined.
My brother and my dad are proud of it. They wear their arrest records like a badge of honor. Me? I want as far away from the lifestyle as I can get.
It’s the only reason I ask Holden to marry me.
I never expect his whispered yes to cause such upheaval in my life. Even though I resist, I learn some havoc is good – and this one? It’s a whirlwind of lust, hope, and love and all I can do is let it sweep me away.
Having read all about Renegade and Tank, I was particularly excited to understand Holden “Havoc” Thompson. As the Moonshine Task force team leader, he took an unusual risk to help save a young woman from neglect, abuse and a connection to crime. Leighton Strather is a young woman whose very family is at the center of the task force investigations.
There are a few things that really piqued my interest in this story; Havoc has about 15 years on and Leighton. It adds an interesting complexity to their already atypical marriage of convenience. Plus I love the older man and younger woman dynamic. And Laramie Briscoe does a great job with these two characters. They never feel unequal. The age difference just adds an element discovery and Havoc is exactly the right kind of man for Leighton. Just by his nature he would never look at Leighton as less, which is what makes this age difference very interesting.
Leighton is a delightful young woman who has too long bared a cross her family has put on her back. The task force community accepting, making for one less challenge for her, and she and Havoc are couple in all but for one aspect. The story really centers around their journey as a couple who have too long denied their chemistry. Their story is sensual and thick with flirtation and foreplay, and it build and builds until things right themselves.
All and all it’s a wonderful story about protection and honor, friendship and lust, and the development of trust and love. The story is well paced and has just the right amount of action. the secondary characters, his and her work associates, help to advance Leightons’ sense of belonging and in a way tighten the bond between she and Havoc. I’m certainly looking forward to continuing to learn about this community and the boys of Moonshine.
