The place where dreams fade and hope dies.
That’s what it’s meant for the five years that Garrett has been behind bars. But now hope is on the horizon and he’s daring to dream again: small dreams, small hopes.
Getting his GED would be a start. If only his prison-appointed teacher Miss Ella Newsome wasn’t so damn sexy.
As Garrett and Ella start to play a dangerous game, the price could be higher than either of them have guessed.
This story first appeared in the anthology HOT FOR TEACHER in 2016. It has since been extended with new scenes, more heart ache and even more heat.
I’m not someone who read a lot of novellas—mainly because I’m very picky and it needs a lot of talent to convince me in such a short novel about the character’s love and devotion to one another. It’s either too rushed and underdeveloped or the characters get together on the last page, leaving me unsatisfied. However, when one of my favorite authors releases a novella, you can bet I’m all over it. And she did not disappoint, but managed to draw me out of a book slump right into a book hangover.
Behind the Wall is everything I want from a novella. I loved the premise—hot student/teacher but without the high school setting I’m not a fan of. Jane Harvey-Berrick manages to write a satisfying novella without making the story feel rushed but well-fleshed out with surprisingly developed characters. I didn’t want it to end.
Garrett and Ella meet under unique circumstances.
Garrett has been incarcerated for the last five years. Life in prison has been hard on him, but it also taught him lessons. He’s let go of the anger he held against the word, he’s trying to change for the better. While getting his GED in prison, he meets the enchanting Ella.
Ella is their teacher, trying to help them to get their high school diploma to better their lives outside. Ever since the first encounter, the sparks have been flying. Their chemistry is palatable through the pages. But Garrett has his issues, trusting someone when his whole life people have disappointed him isn’t easy. Life thought him to be skeptical, distrustful, weary.
But can Ella and her love for him save him in the end? Or will he let the past dictate his future and take away any chance at happiness?
Behind the Wall is another amazing story by Jane Harvey-Berrick. Ella and Garrett’s story is a profound one, trying to teach us acceptance, forgiveness, giving second chances. These characters are some of the most fleshed out I have ever encountered in a novella. The way they fight for their love is inspiring.
I couldn’t get enough of both of them, of their story, of the writing. It’s another brilliant piece by Jane, and I can’t wait for the next one.
