We all have one.
That magic number that will get us to agree to do anything, be anything.
DonÔÇÖt sit on your gold-plated high horse and say you donÔÇÖt because you do. Everyone does. Each of us has something we covet enough that weÔÇÖd sell ourselves to have it.
WhatÔÇÖs my tipping point, you ask? Apparently a cool quarter mil will do the trick.
What does one do for 250 large, you wonder? Anything the infamous, gorgeous playboy of Seattle wants. For the next four months IÔÇÖll be Shaw MercerÔÇÖs arm candy, his beck and call girl, his faux girlfriend. IÔÇÖll be his to command, mold, push and pull in any direction he sees fit.
IÔÇÖll fight falling into bed with him. IÔÇÖll fight falling in love with him even harder. IÔÇÖll fail at both. And when my past and present collide in the most unexpected of ways, IÔÇÖll learn that while one manÔÇÖs love for me has never died, the only manÔÇÖs love I really want will never be mine.
*If dirty-talking, dominant alphas are not your thing, move along. Mature, 18+ only. Book 1 in a 2-part duet.
After reading Black Swan last year, K.L. Kreig became an instant go-to for angsty romance. It was clear that she exactly how to tear out my heart then and put it back together. Lost in Between has done just that. However, my heart is still in tatters as I need book 2 of this duet to be whole again!! A bit melodramatic I know, but this is a drama romance that hits all the marks.
Willow and Shaw have instant connection and this isn’t necessarily one that could be considered as healthy, at least not at first. The premise isn’t entirely unique, Willow is a girl for hire (no sex attached to her service) and Shaw is man who needs a girlfriend. But Kreig devises a situation to bring them together, one that is outside of the context of the paid relationship, and adds the element of near insta-“something”. It’s a connection that feels meant to be. Their initial contact is antagonistic and sparks of a natural chemistry is immediately evident. Kreig manages to shift this into something that shows potential for a deep and meaningful connection. Shaw can be highhanded (which is kinda hot), and he’s certainly an alpha male with a strong sex drive (okay, their encounters are HOT HOT HOT!). But I fear his history may likely come back to haunt them.
There are many challenges; jealous exes, the expiration date on their relationship, and family dynamics, that help build out the characters and drive the plot. My heart broke for Willow time and again as she’s tethered by her obligations and confused by her past and her new feelings for Shaw. There were moments I found myself talking to her…warning her off a potential disaster and wishing her instincts weren’t so clouded. What we know Shaw is pretty centered around his desire for Willow and staking his claim on her. I am overly anxious for the next part of the story and my love for Kreig’s writing continues to grow. 5 Stars and recommendation!
