New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis returns to Heartbreaker Bay with a fun and festive holiday novella!

ItÔÇÖs Christmas Eve and Rory Andrews is desperate to get home to the family she hasnÔÇÖt seen in years. Problem is, her only ride to Lake Tahoe comes in the form of the annoyingly handsome Max Stranton, and his big, goofy, lovable dog Carl.

Hours stuck in a truck with the dead sexy Max sounds like a fate worse than death (not), but Rorys out of options. Shes had a crush on Max since high school and she knows hes attracted to her, too. But they have history and Max is the only one who knows why it went south.

Theyve done a good job of ignoring their chemistry so far, but a long road trip in a massive blizzard might be just what they need to face their past and one steamy, snowy night is all it takes to bring Max and Rory together at last.

One Snowy Night (Heartbreaker Bay, #2.5)One Snowy Night by Jill Shalvis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So I’m kinda a fan of all things Jill Shalvis. I’m never ever disappointed by her books – In fact, I love them greatly and her heartbreaker bay series is a favorite from 2016. One thing I absolutely love is following her Instagram account as many of her pics are from Lake Tahoe. So why am I mentioning that here? Well I romanticize Lake Tahoe/Donner Pass. I’ve experienced a blizzard on this stretch of I-80, so it picture Max and Rory’s dread filled road-trip. There’s almost nothing about this little adventure that either of them look-forward to and it promises to be the longest 5+ hours of either of their lives.

Max and Rory have a very contentious relationship, surviving the drive from SF to Lake Tahoe is going to be tricky as it is. Add in a blizzard on Donner Pass and the stress is ratcheted quite up a bit. This drive is going to requires team work but there’s a very old grudge is at play here and both are simply stubborn people. They challenge each other at every turn and just can’t seem to get along.

Both Max and Rory have formed opinions of each other based on assumptions. The time alone gives them the opportunity to set things straight. Not just with each other, but also with their families. That’s what makes this such a lovely holiday story. The path forward is one of clearing the air and making way for forgiveness. Combine that with the undeniable chemistry between them and it looks like they may just get the chance to do right by themselves and each other. My one complaint is that the story is too short (I know, it’s novella what did I expect?) but I would love to see more of Max and Rory and their Christmas celebrations & their road-trip home. 4 Stars and recommendation!

ÔÇ£You were on the phone,ÔÇØ Rory said.

ÔÇ£I was.ÔÇØ

She looked at him, clearly waiting for more, her pretty eyes not giving much away. She was so petite a good wind could blow her away, but that analogy implied she was fragile.

Rory was anything but fragile, and in fact her inner strength was even more attractive to him than her beauty.

ÔÇ£It was Willa,ÔÇØ he said, willing to give her that. Besides she was more curious than a cat and he wanted to appease that curiosity and fast, before she figured out the rest.

She looked at him, surprised. ÔÇ£What did she want?ÔÇØ

Shit. On top of curious as a cat, she was like Carl with a damn bone. He twisted around to buckle Carl back in and then put on his own seatbelt. He turned the engine over and cranked up the radio.

Rory turned it off. ÔÇ£She already made you drive me, so what now?ÔÇØ

Rory turned in her seat to fully face him. ÔÇ£Was she checking to see if weÔÇÖd killed each other?ÔÇØ

He smiled at that, a thought that had been so close to his own, but she narrowed her eyes, not amused. ÔÇ£What did she want, Max?ÔÇØ

He went to put the truck in gear but she leaned into him to turn off the engine and grab his keys. Her breast brushed against his arm, giving him another zap of awareness.

ÔÇ£Come on,ÔÇØ she said. ÔÇ£This is Willa weÔÇÖre talking about. I love her, but sheÔÇÖs incapable of not sticking her nose in where it doesnÔÇÖt belong, especially when it comes to me. What did she want?ÔÇØ

Shit, itÔÇÖd been two minutes and he was already regretting his ÔÇ£gentleÔÇØ promise. He looked her right in the eyes. ÔÇ£Nothing.ÔÇØ

Her eyes went to little slits. ÔÇ£Liar.ÔÇØ She opened her door, revealing that the slush had turned to snow, as she swung his keys from her fingers. ÔÇ£Tell me or say goodbye to your keys.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£ThatÔÇÖll strand you too,ÔÇØ he pointed out.

She raised her eyebrows and he got the message. She didnÔÇÖt care.

ÔÇ£Fine,ÔÇØ he said. ÔÇ£She told me to be nice to you. Actually, she said gentle.ÔÇØ While she gaped at that, he snagged the keys from her lax fingers, feeling like an asshole when he leaned into her, reaching past her to slam her door shut.

She didnÔÇÖt shrink back, which meant that their bodies once again bumped up against each other, and it was like they knew what his brain couldnÔÇÖt seem to comprehendÔÇöhe wanted her. He was a little thrown by that, and the now familiar zing of electricity, only slightly mollified to realize by the way her breath hitched that she felt it too.

ÔÇ£If you even try to be gentle,ÔÇØ she said, ÔÇ£IÔÇÖll get out and walk.ÔÇØ

About Jill Shalvis

Writes books. Also takes pics and naps. Oh and consumes cookies. I'm real good at that.

Also...New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis lives in a small town in the Sierras with her family and far too many assorted quirky characters. Any resemblance to the quirky characters in her books is, um, mostly coincidental. Look for Jill's bestselling, award-winning books wherever romances are sold.
