As an archivist in a small museum, the biggest thing Helen Jurist has to deal with each year is the Annual Donor Gala. When her museum becomes a flurry of activity, due to the nearby discovery of a large Viking hoard, Helen finds the additional responsibility more of a pain than an honour. She doesnÔÇÖt know anything about Vikings, or what makes the hoard so unusual. She just wants to get through the gala without her boss catching the drapes on fire.
Nobody from the public is supposed to have access to the find, but try telling that to Rune Helsen. A handsome Dane with wolfish desires, he walks around like he owns the place. HeÔÇÖs HelenÔÇÖs worst nightmareÔÇöif only her traitorous body wasnÔÇÖt so attracted to him.
But Rune has a secret, one that brought him to see the artifacts for more than just scholarly interest. Unknown to Helen, thereÔÇÖs so much more at stake than just pulling off a successful evening. A whole world she never knew existed, a world of vampires and shifters, stands on the precipiceÔÇöand thereÔÇÖs something in the Cutler Hoard that could burn it all down.

This is a really fast-paced and short novella that dips its toes into the paranormal. ┬áIt needs to be said at the outset so you won’t be surprised. ┬áIt’s a really interesting premise about a woman recently out of college working as an archivist in a museum with a rare and highly sought-after collection. ┬áThere are some crotchety characters and you’ll find yourself trying to figure out the rhyme and reason for their behaviors.

This collection brings Rune into Helen’s life. ┬áHe’s an interesting one and you’re not quite sure what to make of him – is he a good guy or a bad guy? ┬áHis mysterious qualities make him elusive but kind of irresistible. ┬áI like the smoothness of his character because I never once felt him to be threatening or smarmy; he shows interest in Helen and an immediate protectiveness towards her. ┬áWhile the feelings may seem to progress quickly, it goes hand-in-hand with the fact that this is a novella. ┬áWe don’t get to delve too much into him; we only get a brief taste of Rune, but we know enough to see that he is an upstanding man.

I didn’t have a lasting impression about Helen except to say that she seemed to be floating through life. ┬áWhile she was fortunate to land such an esteemed position, it comes across as though she could really take or leave her job. ┬áMaybe this is why she finds herself open to Rune and his secrets. ┬áReally, what does she have to lose? ┬áMaybe she’ll find more of herself and what really bring her to life with Rune.

The good news is that this is the first book in the series.

(PSSSTTTT!!!  Danielle Hardgrave has confirmed she is writing the next book which should be out in December!!!)

I hope it’s a full-length novel because there are too many questions to answer, too many characters to delve into, and too many possibilities in Hardgrave’s paranormal world.

(PSSSSTTT PART 2: She said it’s a full-length novel!) ┬á

So, if you like paranormal romance or are looking to test out this genre with an easy kread, give this novella a go. ┬áDon’t forget to keep an eye out for the second book when we’ll get a lot more answers about this whole new world she’s created.
