I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
IÔÇÖve loved him as long as I can remember.
The gangly boy with big brown eyes and unruly hair who grew up into an intoxicating man. He wears scruff like he invented it and ambles with a swagger that makes panties drop.
We grew up together. We played Ghost in the Graveyard. Had our own rock band. It didnÔÇÖt matter that he was five years older than me. It didnÔÇÖt matter that he looked at me as a kid sister even as I grew into a woman. It didnÔÇÖt even matter when he left me behind to go to college and start his adult life.
HeÔÇÖd be back.
He was always meant to be mine.
He came back, all right. But instead of smelling of promises, he stunk of betrayal. And he destroyed meÔÇöusÔÇöthe day he married my sister instead of me.
So I did the only thing a girl like me in my position could do.
I got my revenge.
I married his brother, Kael.
Now weÔÇÖre one big happy fucking family.
Well I burned through this book in no time. Black Swan Affair is simply one fantastic read. ItÔÇÖs a completely captivating with as much, no, more angst than I expected. IÔÇÖm new to K.L. Kreig books, but now that IÔÇÖve found her I took the plunge and picked up a few more. This one is among my favorites for the year and one I highly recommend if you love a story that makes you feel conflicted.
The Shepherd boys completely control MaverickÔÇÖs heartstrings, always have and always will. YouÔÇÖll wonder why she would agree to marrying Kael if she is so in love with Killian. It seems fueled by revenge but we come to learn that MaverickÔÇÖs feeling are much more complex than that. Mav is convinced sheÔÇÖll never ever be truly happy married to Kael so itÔÇÖs all about Mav accepting and getting through her new life as his wife. How will she handle her childhood friend who morphed into her adult best friend and now her lover?
Kael and Killian Shephard have been constants in in her life. She loves them both, but one has completely broken her trust and the other is simply trying to win her heart, her whole heart. ItÔÇÖs one of those reads that while things are moving forward and Maverick starts to relax into her new role as KaelÔÇÖs wife, her feelings start to shift and become even more muddled. There are flashbacks that show her relationship with each man over the years and we also get the story from 2 perspectives. We only know Killian from Mav and Kael’s interactions and memories. This is a big part of the brilliance of the story telling. Killian is a bit of a mystery, his pleas for Mav to wait for him bolsters her confusion and set us up for a twist. All the elements combined make this one of those reads that you wonÔÇÖt be able to put down as we try to figure out why. Should she might have waited for Killian? Is there any going back? Are there other factors playing into what she feels for Kael? Is there room for change in that relationship? Arghhh – itÔÇÖs just all so heart wrenching
The writing, both the internal dialogue & character conversations, and the plot twists are so well done. The story setting was different than I expected and it made it feel all the more relatable. This book created such a storm of emotions for me. I wasnÔÇÖt sure what I wanted for Maverick but IÔÇÖll say it turns out exactly how I wanted. BSA is a ┬á5++ Star #MustRead
