I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
My name is Roman Cavenaugh and IÔÇÖm kind of an asshole.
Running a company isn't easy, especially when everyone expects you to fail, so being a jerk? It comes with the territory.
I don't have time to mess around, and I sure as hell didnÔÇÖt see her coming.
Cara Hamiltonshe was supposed to be off limitsa temporary employee brought in during my assistants maternity leave.
But, in the blink of an eye, she became so much more.
An obsession I couldnÔÇÖt shake.
So yeah, I may be an asshole, but now, I finally had a purpose, and soon, she would be mine.
Alls fair in love and war
I cannot believe Behind Closed Doors by JL Berg is my first ever book by her. What have I been missing out on? Behind Closed Doors is an amazing book in its simplicityÔÇöthe simple, yet immensely beautiful prose is what will keep readers engaged from page one, while the complex and intriguing main characters make you fall in love with it.
Roman Cavanaugh is a man closed off to the world, quite literally. Throwing himself into work and nothing else, he tries to proof to the world, but especially his late father, that he is not a failure. He is one of the biggest contradictions in the world of romance I have read in a while. Yes, heÔÇÖs one huge jerk to everyone around himÔÇörude, inconsiderate, and has made an art out of ignoring people.
And yet, that is only the surface, the mask he shows the word, the thing he hides behind. Beneath all of his cantankerous attitude however, he is a sweet, generous, and genuine person who unfortunately has been severely hurt in the past by people and circumstances out of his control.
The one person who is able to see past his attitude to the person he really is, is Cara HamiltonÔÇöa sweet, genuine, and somewhat na├»ve girl from the Midwest. Someone new to New York City. Her fresh and unencumbered outlook on life set her apart from every other phony in the cityÔÇöit definitely makes her special. While sheÔÇÖs not the strongest heroine IÔÇÖve ever read outright, her unassuming way of looking at things and dealing with her issues, and the fact that she is rather self-aware, makes her one of my favorites for sure.
Both Roman and Cara are flawed humans. They make mistakes, some graver than others, they have their own issues, are riddled with self-doubt and questions about mundane things. I loved the fact that Miss Berg didnÔÇÖt try to sell us a perfect couple, but a couple who grew perfect together, but still had to overcome some hiccups.
This is ultimately a story about not only finding loveÔÇöthe one person we want to spend the rest of our lives withÔÇöbut also be brave enough to embrace it, to feel worthy of it, and to fight for it. Sometimes, jumping, while scary, is the single one action that will change your life for the better. You just have to be courageous enough to take that first step.
Behind Closed Doors is a beautiful story, written in simple but poignant prose, that thrives to teach us many things. I definitely recommend this book, and JL Berg as an author. Anyone who hasnÔÇÖt read anything by this amazing author yet, unquestionably should!
