From the author of the Walker Series comes a family drama like no other, a sprawling character epic, a forbidden love story full of angst, adventure, heartbreak, and second chances. Welcome to the mother chapter of the Lean Dogs Motorcycle Club; meet the girl raised by outlaws, and the fearsome man who will always hold her heart.
Ava Teague left for college with a busted heart and a deeply ingrained love for her biker family. She returns home to Knoxville for grad school, just in time for her father to accept the burden of presidentÔǪand for Mercy L├®cuyer to roll back into town, looking to patch into the Tennessee chapter once more.
Felix L├®cuyer left the swamps of Louisiana for a life as an outlaw biker named Mercy, but it was his family, and the retribution he dealt because of it, that made him famous within the club. Fourteen years ago he fled New Orleans for Knoxville, to become an extractor and bodyguard within the mother chapter, guarding Ghost TeagueÔÇÖs family, becoming a constant companion to little Ava. When she was seventeen, he finally crossed the line. Now sheÔÇÖs twenty-two, and heÔÇÖs back in town as an old nemesis rears its ugly head, and puts the entire club in danger. The fate of the club is uncertain, but Mercy has no doubts about his heart; it still belongs to Ava.
GAHHHH!! So many other reviewers have already said anything I could say about Fearless. It’s pretty much a perfect read. Laurens’ writing is FLAWLESS! Her characters are so expertly crafted I felt like I crawled right into their heads and hearts. Because of this, I truly didn’t want the story to end. The book is deliciously stretched out and one that should be read when you can truly focus on it. Scratch that ~ you’ll be completely captivated and won’t be able to help yourself from being caught up in Lean Dogs MC and the lives of the Teagues and one Felix “Mercy” L├®cuyer.
While there is a great mystery driving the story, what I loved is how it showcases the lifestyle of the members of an MC club with the good and bad that surrounds that. I felt my blood boil, my heart seize, and my breathe being taken as the club is under siege. But for me, of course, this is the story of an EPIC Love. Ava Teague (daughter to a senior member of the club) and Mercy simply have that soul connection. Theirs is a union that feels like it must be one continuing on from a past lifetime. In this instance, their love begins with Mercy protecting Ava and and Ava finding a singular person she trust explicitly. It evolves into so much more and then becomes taboo in this small circle. But Ava and Mercy are just meant to be, so when they are driven apart and brought back together, my heart soared. The way Gilley presents the story, unfolding it a a perfect pace and going back and forth in time, makes for an interesting and not always easy ride. Ava is a bada$$ and Mercy recognize her as something entirely unique. It’s a long excerpt, but it is so telling:
“She wasnÔÇÖt one of the women to him. Not a part of that mysterious cluster of chatting females heÔÇÖd never understand. He didnÔÇÖt categorize Ava that way ÔÇô as a woman. She wasÔǪshe was just this person. His person, that heÔÇÖd always understood and loved. She was just Ava, and the three letters of her name held an essential meaning for him, one that he didnÔÇÖt have to justify or explain to himself. There was not, nor had there even been, any confusion when it came to her. Guilt, yes ÔÇô plenty of guilt these days. But his complete comprehension of her as a living thing couldnÔÇÖt he shaken by something as simple as sex.”
I will say that at a certain point I cried “tears of relief” and that’s new to me. Sure I’ve cried tears of heartache. But tears of joy/relief, never! Even just reading through my highlights, I’m fighting off a re-read and want to shout from the rooftops how great this book is. Slight warning there are some brutal things that go down but Gilley handles these moments honestly but without drawing them out.
While I’m desperate to return to the Lean Dogs and to be in Michael’s head, I know I must plan for the perfect time. It’s high priority on my summer reading list, for a time when I won’t have too many interruptions and can soak up all the charm and drama of Dartmoor.
