Fame, fortune, and stadiums full of screaming fans are right around the corner for the rock band at the heart of Stina LindenblattÔÇÖs steamy, intense Pushing Limits series. But itÔÇÖs an epic love affair that steals the show in this opening act.
When Nolan Kincaid skipped town to chase the music career of his dreams, he knew he wouldnÔÇÖt miss the reminders of his broken familyÔÇöhe wasnÔÇÖt so sure he could forget the girl he left behind. Now his band is touring nonstop, the recording sessions go all night, and the groupies are crazed. But when he hears that Hailey Wilkins is in trouble, he drops everything.
Hailey thought sheÔÇÖd missed her chance with Nolan. Five years ago, the moment she realized she loved him was the moment he decided to leave. Now, when a brutal assault lands her in the ICU, Nolan flies straight to her bedside, acting like nothingÔÇÖs changed. WhatÔÇÖs a rock star like him doing, canceling shows and risking his record deal, just to nurse an old friend back to health? And why should Hailey believe heÔÇÖll stay this time?
With her attacker still at large, NolanÔÇÖs ready to rise to the occasion. He knows he let Hailey down once before, but heÔÇÖs ready to give her everything, heart and soulÔÇöand heÔÇÖll fight for the chance to prove it.
Stina Lindenblatt’s This One Moment combines friendship┬á& ┬áunrequited love into a great package of romantic suspense. ┬áIt’s the first book by the author that I’ve read and I found it to be enjoyable and highly readable. Told in alternating points of view, from that of musician Nolan Kincaid and college student┬áHailey Wilkins, ┬áwe slowly come to know┬áthe hard truth of what drove Nolan away from Northbridge, Minnesota and the only person that could ever draw him back home.
We initially meet Nolan, in his musician persona as┬áTyler Erickson. Living a life based on half truths and outright lies as it’s managed by his record labels PR machine. Initially he’s only sorta likable, but within a matter of a few chapters, he’s stepping up to face a past that will take the majority of the story to absorb. He gets huge props for returning home and persevering against Hailey’s desire for him to just go, but he wants to help the only girl he’s ever loved get through a bad time.
Hailey has good reason not to trust Nolan and while the two share the burden of hiding their feelings from each other, it’s a bumpy ride getting them back to a place of trust.┬á┬áThis makes the story both entertaining and maddening. ┬áHailey is rightly frustrated by Nolan’s unwillingness to face down his pasts and ultimately this will lead to a discovery that leaves them both confused and hurt.
I really did enjoy the suspense part of the story and the angst that ‘s brought on by Hailey denying what she thinks she has control over. Their issues are compounded by his life in the spotlight and by the lack of communication between them. Lindenblatt uses some surprising secondary characters to shake up Nolan’s passive acceptance and Hailey’s stubbornness. ┬áThis is book 1 in a promising new series and I sincerely hope we┬ásee more of┬á┬áNolan and Hailey as we get to know the band Pushing Limits.
