Well doesn’t that title just make you curious? I certainly was, and rightfully so. AULS is an unusual love story for sure with a story line that contains more than couple of interesting twists. – both in plot and how it made me feel. Told in 4 parts, the story unfolds over a half year or so and centers on one Simon St John. But, the story isnÔÇÖt from his point of view – at least not until the very end. However itÔÇÖs SimonÔÇÖs actions that drive the story and youÔÇÖd be hard pressed not to feel twisted up about him. An Unforgivable Love Story is a 5 star read and based on the angst I felt, it’s one I highly recommend.
This is my first BL Berry read and I quickly discovered that I enjoy her writing, both stylistically and how she so cleverly devises the plot. The story opens with Elyse Keener reflecting on her latest one night stand and her desire and fear to let it anything more. Simon quickly charms Elyse (and us) and thereÔÇÖs just no way she can stop herself from falling for him. Berry does an amazing job describing their connection so itÔÇÖs easy to feel the depth of their relationship. But just when they seem to be moving into the next stage, the proverbial ÔÇ£other shoeÔÇØ drops and I felt a bit shell shocked.
When part 2 started, I went to from containing my turmoil to my inside voice to out and out audible gasp. As the story is now from a surprising and new point of view, we see the extent of just how little Elyse knows of Simon. Berry certainly challenges the reader to accept a different perspective of Simon. This new information, the true circumstances, are pretty despicable. HeÔÇÖs not at all likable throughout Part 2 – nope, heÔÇÖs a downright jack a$$. Yet when ElyseÔÇÖs voice returns in Part 3, I found myself wondering why he was so compelled to risk what he feels for Elyse, which I felt was genuine, by withholding the truth. The way he handles things baffled me and left me feeling all sorts of confused and angry, and sad too. I found myself trying to for excuses for him all while I detested his actions. By the time we get SimonÔÇÖs voice in Part 4, he shows his true, and frightening nature ~ he’s a very gifted liar. HeÔÇÖs so undeserving and itÔÇÖs maddening to see how the cycle is well on its way to begin again… 5 Stars and recommendation!
