HONOR, LOYALTY, LOVE
David Cruz is good at two things: war and training dogs. The ex-soldier's toughest case is Atlas, a Belgian Malinois whose handler died in combat. Nobody at Hope's Crossing kennel can break through the animal's grief. That is, until dog whisperer Evelyn Jones walks into the facility . . . and into Atlas's heart. David hates to admit that the curvy blonde's mesmerizing effect isn't limited to canines. But when Lyn's work with Atlas puts her in danger, David will do anything to protect her.
Lyn realizes that David's own battle scars make him uniquely qualified for his job as a trainer. Tough as nails yet gentle when it counts, he's gotten closer to Atlas than anyone else-and he's willing to put his hard-wired suspicion aside to let her do the same. But someone desperate enough to kill doesn't want Lyn working with Atlas. Now only teamwork, trust, and courage can save two troubled hearts and the dog who loves them both . . .
Hot military heroes, the women who love them, and the devoted dogs that always have their backs. ┬áEXTREME HONOR is the first book in a high adrenaline contemporary suspense series from Piper J. Drake published by Forever Romance. Fans of Jill ShalvisÔÇÖs Animal Attraction series and Cindy GerardÔÇÖs One Eyed Jacks, will love this brand new action packed romantic suspense series.

Extreme Honor is the first book in a new series by Piper J Drake and it’s also the first book by her that IÔÇÖve read. I was intrigued by the idea of the military use of dogs so I suppose that was the initial draw. The first thing that stuck out to me when I began reading was the writing. It was smooth from the get go and within the first few chapters the tone was set and the characters , primarily David Cruz, Lyn Jones and Atlas, came to life. Now, IÔÇÖm really excited about the series and excited to pick up more books by Piper. ThereÔÇÖs plenty of buildup to mystery and lots of small clues as to whatÔÇÖs at play throughout making it great romantic suspense read.
Evelyn (Lyn) Jones is a skilled trainer who is sent to work with a military service dog suffering from PTSD. Drake uses interesting facts and details about the techniques used to work with animal behavior and shows how the connection between Lyn and Atlas is a part of the healing process. AtlasÔÇÖs story was heartbreaking and Lyn was the perfect match for him. I donÔÇÖt think IÔÇÖve ever seen a Belgian Malinois in person and now I find myself fascinated by the breed (I may have researched availability in my area but I digress). Atlas taking to Lyn quickly is a boon for the cause, but itÔÇÖs Lyn’s relationship with her step-father that is key in this storyline. YouÔÇÖll want to pay close attention to it. It also gives Lyn some history and dimensionality. Their interactions leave her much to contemplate as she reflects on how his personality and his treatment of her impacts her choices.
While Lyn is very likable and drives much of the story, it was David Cruz who claimed my attention. HeÔÇÖs not perfect. He has regrets and his own war wounds to contend with. But David is a man of action. Like the man he is, his attraction to Lyn is multifaceted. Sure thereÔÇÖs the physical draw, but with her heÔÇÖs respectful, understanding, considerate and protective. The chemistry between them is natural (and off the charts hot) and I appreciate that Drake lets their connection grow at nice a pace. The story isnÔÇÖt completely anchored around it, but itÔÇÖs enhanced and falls in with the direction of the mystery. But back to David… I have so many highlights of passages where CruzÔÇÖs actions and words melted me. In the final 5%, he displays a sensitivity that was simply breathtaking. HeÔÇÖs smart and unselfish and a BBF keeper. What’s more is Lyn knows it and I like a smart heroine.
Extreme Honor is a well plotted and well researched story line. ThereÔÇÖs lots of intrigue and action but if you like any type of romance read, this a great book to pick up.
