Sometimes the heart wants what it canÔÇÖt have.
ThatÔÇÖs the motto Silas Mackenzie, the president of The Dixie Wardens MC, has lived by since he was a young man.
Now heÔÇÖs well on the way to middle age, has three grown children, and heÔÇÖs lusting after a woman he should definitely stay away from.
Especially not one that his ex-girlfriend had given birth to, and happened to be only twenty seven years old.
Sawyer isnÔÇÖt a young girl at heart, though.
SheÔÇÖs seen the inside of a jail cell for eight long years, and every one of them she spent paying for a crime she didnÔÇÖt commit.
Silas Mackenzie knows as soon as he sees her that the girl has sacrificed enough. And maybejust maybeso has Silas.
ItÔÇÖs time for Silas Mackenzie to get what he deserves, and put a little bit of happy back into SawyerÔÇÖs world, one rough, bearded kiss at a time.
Lani Lynn Vale does it again! Counter To My Intelligence is everything lovers of Biker Romance would wantÔÇöan overprotective, possessive Alpha Man; strong, a take-no-shit heroine; and an intriguing, sexy, and well-thought out story line.
We have met Silas Mackenzie in numerous of LaniÔÇÖs previous books and IÔÇÖm happy that he finally received his own happily ever after, even if itÔÇÖs not necessarily conventional. Silas has sacrificed a lot for his family, his country, and his MC, and itÔÇÖs about time he took something for himselfÔÇöhis own slice of happiness. He appears to be this big, bad, bas-ass biker, but underneath all the leather, tattoos, and beard is a sweet man who would do anything for the people he loves. What he didnÔÇÖt expect, however, is fall for a woman half his age, especially when a threat from the past has just surfaced again.
Sawyer Berry has just been through hell. Imprisoned for eight years for a crime she didnÔÇÖt commit, but blames herself for regardless, she has just been released. She lost most of her twenties to the prison, dodging sexual assault from guards, and has matured beyond her 28 years. Sawyer is not the studious, shy, innocent girl who went to school to become a nurse anymore. SheÔÇÖs a hardened, and somewhat broken woman, with no self-worth. She further believes that she doesnÔÇÖt deserve happiness due to the grief one night caused other people and the whole community. She meets Silas as her most vulnerable, she doesnÔÇÖt think herself worthy of love.
Watching Silas and Sawyer fall for one another was beautiful. Silas is your typical hot alpha man, stuck in his ways, and knowing what he wants. And he goes after what he wants, even if he has to convince her that she is worth it. Silas and SawyerÔÇÖs chemistry is explosive. Even though there are quite a few obstacles in their wayÔÇötheir age difference and his grown childrenÔÇöthey manage to build something strong and solid.
I immensely enjoyed this story. Their love grows gradually and beautifully, and even though there are the usual trials they go through, nothing is over-the-top and only for dramaÔÇÖs sake, which I loved. Once they commit to one another, they didnÔÇÖt cause unnecessary drama by not communicating. This is a great book for any alpha biker romance!
While this story is part of the Dixie Wardens MC series, and I highly recommend reading them all due to the interconnectedness of the characters, you can read this as a standalone.

ÔÇ£I like your vest.ÔÇØ
ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs called a cut,ÔÇØ he muttered laughingly.
ÔÇ£WhatÔÇÖs a cut?ÔÇØ I asked.
The hail and rain got worse, hitting the roof and the side of the garage like tiny little battering rams.
ÔÇ£A leather vest,ÔÇØ he quipped.
I giggled against his chest, turning my face so it could rest against his neck.
He growled when I kissed his exposed throat, but otherwise didnÔÇÖt move.
ÔÇ£Joking aside, itÔÇÖs my club. The cut is me. The top rocker, which is the white banner at the top, is our club name,ÔÇØ he said.
I felt along his back as he spoke, feeling what he was saying as he explained what each one was.
ÔÇ£The bottom rocker is our clubÔÇÖs location. WeÔÇÖre in Benton. We have other chapters all over the south,ÔÇØ he explained. ÔÇ£On the front is my name, club title, and the city again.ÔÇØ
I knew he was explaining this to me to get my mind off the fact that the roof was shaking around us, literally.
ÔÇ£I canÔÇÖt believe Dallas hasnÔÇÖt at least come to check on me,ÔÇØ I muttered darkly.
He tangled my hands in my hair, and I looked up at himor where I thought he was.
ÔÇ£Your brother is a shit head. And I donÔÇÖt think he even realizes that he is. Because if he did, he wouldnÔÇÖt be telling your parents anything about how you were. My guess is that he really is worried, but he doesnÔÇÖt know how to handle that worry. So, he closes himself off, telling himself that by telling your mother how he thinks youÔÇÖre doing, heÔÇÖs helping. Which, in reality, heÔÇÖs not,ÔÇØ Silas said. ÔÇ£Maybe itÔÇÖs time you had a talk with him, let him know you donÔÇÖt appreciate being treated as a child.ÔÇØ
I agreed, and IÔÇÖd already planned on doing that.
ÔÇ£I was going to do that today, but then he had that huge freakinÔÇÖ party,ÔÇØ I told him darkly. ÔÇ£And I had to park in the street.ÔÇØ
He lowered his mouth down to mine.
ÔÇ£Well, then itÔÇÖs a good thing heÔÇÖs preoccupied, because right about now I could really fuck you on top of his car and heÔÇÖd never even know,ÔÇØ he said tightly, lifting my body off the bench and laying me down on the carÔÇÖs hood.
I laughed. ÔÇ£You know,ÔÇØ I said as he stripped my shorts from me. ÔÇ£This is my brotherÔÇÖs pride and joy.ÔÇØ
ÔÇ£Well your brotherÔÇÖs pride and joy is about to become our fuck stand,ÔÇØ he growled, then he was on me.
