Break Even is one INTENSE read. I started reading it around 1 am because I couldn’t sleep, then I couldn’t sleep because I started reading it. ┬áFrom the book synopsis we know we are meeting a woman feeling ignored and enduring the odd ugly kind of hurt that neglect generates, ┬áand then suddenly she seems to be smack down in the middle of a battle. It’s her will against her new clients or perhaps something and someone else at play?
From the go I had sympathy for Marley and although the story centers around infidelity, I completely understood why she’d allow herself to go there. ┬áSo I ┬ágave her my own emotional hall pass. It really couldn’t be helped because Lisa creates such┬áa powerful connection between Marley and River that there was no way to not want that for her. ┬áRooting for them made sense and the intimacy was written so well. Yes, its a very sexy story! Left to their own devices, these two just had that kind of chemistry.
At first River just seems like a pesky customer with a normal attraction to a beautiful woman. He senses an opening (and a challenge) so naturally he is relentless. But damn if he wasn’t romantic and surprisingly genuine in the attention he pays to Marley. ┬áFor her part, Marley is conflicted. She and Cole have a decade of history and she’s loyal to Cole but too many broken promises and you can see why her emotions are frayed. ┬áJust when we are feeling the dread about the demise of the relationship with Cole, the story is blown wide open. ┬áI had become comfortable thinking I understood what I wanted for Marley, then suddenly I realized ┬áI had no idea. Like Marley, ┬áI was totally caught off guard and realization dawned that things just aren’t what they seem. From this point on out I felt a sort of blood lust.
If I thought about putting the book down to actually grab a couple hours if sleep, it seemed De Jong knew it and had other plans. The story was paced just right and there really aren’t any lulls. So my warning is to plan to make this a one sitting read.┬áIt’s been a while since I’ve read anything by Lisa De Jong but I won’t make that mistake again. 5 Stars and my recommendation to Break Even.

River sets a tray down on the counter, startling me. ÔÇ£You do that a lot?ÔÇØ
ÔÇ£Do what?ÔÇØ I ask, relieved to distract myself from the pressure of the situation.
ÔÇ£Bite your lip.ÔÇØ
ÔÇ£I was just thinking,ÔÇØ I admit, resisting the pull the ocean has on me.
He cups my face in his hands. ÔÇ£DonÔÇÖt let yourself ruin this weekend by overthinking anything. ItÔÇÖs ours, and IÔÇÖm not willing to give it up yet.ÔÇØ
I open my mouth to speak, but he kisses me instead. The picture within the clear blue water fades. River kisses me until IÔÇÖm blind of my worries and guilt. Whoever said an ocean is better than a river has never met my River.
ÔÇ£Better?ÔÇØ he asks as he pulls away.
ÔÇ£Much.ÔÇØ I watch as he sits on the edge of the tub and turns the water off. When I first met him, I saw him differently. His compassion was veiled by arrogance. If River Holtz wanted, he could make a woman happy for more than a┬ánight.
He motions me over to where he sits.
I lift myself from the counter, slowly walking to him. When IÔÇÖm close enough, he reaches for me, pulling me against his rock hard body. His chin rests on my chest as he looks up at me. ÔÇ£YouÔÇÖre mine until tomorrow morning. DonÔÇÖt forget that.ÔÇØ
I comb my fingers through his hair. ÔÇ£I havenÔÇÖt. And, I also havenÔÇÖt forgotten that after I leave here tomorrow, weÔÇÖre nothing.ÔÇØ
ÔÇ£Not true,ÔÇØ he says, kissing between my breasts. ÔÇ£IÔÇÖll always be the guy you wish you could have again. The one youÔÇÖll compare everyone else to.ÔÇØ
