Is that how a little girl sits?
How should a little girl sit?
Shoulders back and tummy in.
And how should a little girl look?
Always neat and pretty
ThatÔÇÖs my girl.
Twenty-four-year-old Alexa Kennedy is beautiful, sharp as a whip, and at the top of her medical school class. SheÔÇÖs also been waging a war in her head for as long as she can remember. Depression. Hatred. Self-loathing. These feelings feed the pain inside her, fueling her quest for a perfection that she can never achieve.
In one life-changing moment, Dex Blakewell crashes into her world. Dex is funny, gorgeous, and irresistible. He chases away the darkness and fills her with light and laughter. An unusual friendship blossoms, making no demands or expectations.
Friendship turns into an unexpected love and a delicious passion. Alexa realizes that the only thing tethering her to sanity is their connection. But even DexÔÇÖs strength canÔÇÖt keep her demons at bay forever.
When life overwhelms her, the outside world starts to mirror her inner turmoil. And when Dex discovers sheÔÇÖs been keeping horrible secrets, will she finally shatter or find a way through the darkness? Will the promise of love be enough to save her from self-destruction?
I’ve been looking forward to Keeping Secrets by Lisa Eugene after reading and loving her book Grayson.
Similarly, Keeping Secrets takes on a serious topic and incorporates it into a beautiful and sweet love story. A story about a love that conquers it all, that doesn’t change and that is willing to fight through the hardships a mental illness poses. The kind of love that makes our soul sigh and our heart tremble in awe. That’s the love that Alexa and Dex share.
But it doesn’t start out like that. Oh no. When they meet, they share a mutual dislike for each other. That irritation quickly turns into friendshipÔÇösomething neither of them expected or were looking for. Soon, a friendship isn’t enough as they can’t deny their attraction much longer. What started out as a complete mess has morphed into a loving and caring relationship, with respect, passion and fun to boot.
But both, Alexa and Dex, are keeping secretsÔÇösecrets that influence their actions and emotions. And Alexa’s secrets are the ones that can destroy not only the bond her and Dex share but potentially threaten Alexa’s life.
Alexa is a perfectionist, always striving for success and beating herself up when she doesn’t achieve the best results. She doesn’t know anything else. It’s only when Dex enters her life, that she actually starts living. But there is a part of her nobody knows about. A part that’s making her life a living hell, forcing her to hate herself every waking minute. A part that puts her on a path of self-destruction and it’s only a matter of time before it wears her down. It’s a balancing act between hiding her secrets and trying to let someone in. But no matter how much she loves Dex, this is a side of herself she can’t show.
When things in her life start crumbling to pieces, the choice is not hers to make anymore as her secrets come to light. Now it’s up to Dex to decide if his love is strong enough to weather the storm and accept all of who Alexa is. My heart broke for herÔÇöwith every chapter a little more.
The way Lisa Eugene wrote this, wrote Alexa’s pain, it was actually palpable. Alexa’s despair so vivid, it actually felt uncomfortable and suffocating just reading about it. The mental health issues that Alexa deals with were described with knowledge, respect and tact, making Keeping Secrets a book that can help people understand what someone with Alexa’s issues is going through.
But my heart didn’t just break for Alexa. Dex’s pain wasn’t something easily ignored either.
He’s a rich, successful CEO. A man not easily fooled. He’s sexy, hot, and smart. But even more importantly, he’s a man with a beautiful soulÔÇöa soul that’s been crushed to pieces on more than one occasion. So he’s hesitant to trust and let anyone in, yet he has no chance to fight his feelings for Alexa.
But when he finds out she’s been keeping secrets and lying to him, the fears of his past catch up to him quickly and make it hard for him to see straight. Once burned, twice shyÔÇöand he hasn’t just been burned, but scorched.
Yet, and this is what I loved about him, he finds a way to put his anger aside and let the feelings of love win. He seriously steps up to the plate and his love, support but also his stern attitude when necessary are what help Alexa find her inner strengthÔÇöto stand up for herself and to heal.
The story was beautiful and the sex scenes were at their basic level hot. ButÔÇöand this is the reason that I can’t give the whole five starsÔÇösome words were a no-go. I know that this is a personal preference, but it kills a sex scene instantly when I read words like moist, channel, creamy slit, swollen glands, or moist petals. No, just no. It made me cringe. And it made all the erotic mood the scenes held disappear.
