Blood. Sex. Revenge.
Being king comes at a brutal price.

Drug lord Javier Bernal has sliced and diced his way to the top of the Mexican drug trade, presiding over the country's largest cartel. But his rise to power comes at a brutal price: the death of his sister, Alana. Devastated and wracked with guilt, he turns away from his new wife, Luisa, forcing their marriage into a steady decline. But it isn't until she's pushed into the waiting arms of Esteban Mendoza, his right-hand man, that Javier realizes everything he's lost.
And it isn't until he learns the truth about Alana, that he realizes everything there is to gain.
Blood will spill.
Cities will burn.
Heads will roll.
Because Javier will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants.
And what he wants is raw, ruthless revenge.

Nothing is more dangerous than a man with nothing left to lose.

**WARNING: contains scenes of rape and torture, reader discretion is advised.**

Karina Halle delivers BIG on the third and final book of the Dirty Angels series, Dirty Promises. ItÔÇÖs a story that will make you believe you are there, you are a part of the Mexican Cartel, and believing it will set you edge. Saying itÔÇÖs an uncomfortable read would be putting it lightly – very lightly. The Dirty Angels series by Karina Halle is one of the most terrifying and gritty series that IÔÇÖve read and took ÔÇ£fictionalÔÇØ Stockholm Syndrome to an entirely new level. Yes, Javier and Luisa Bernal are one of my favorite book couples.

The story picks up months after Javier loses his sister ( Dirty Deeds). Admittedly the impossible happened and I fell for Javier in Dirty Angels. Within the first two chapters of Dirty Promises it was all undone, he proves himself to be nearly inhuman. Trusting Javier is hard, but then you realize they are worse options for a hero and when he becomes the lesser of two evils, he starts to worm his way back into your graces. This story messes with your sense of love and loyalty.

Not surprisingly IÔÇÖve never liked Este, JavierÔÇÖs right hand man. Halle writes him in a way that I can only picture greasy and schmary man. He is never someone that can be trusted, so when he begins to gain LuisaÔÇÖs interest, the really uncomfortable feeling invades and itÔÇÖs like being on a death watch. ThereÔÇÖs almost no way to feel that the situation Luisa puts herself in can go in a direction that will end up even okay for her. This made Dirty Promises one of the most stressful reads of my life. I was on constant alert, with every page waiting for the situation to implode. When it does, itÔÇÖs with great panache and it never slows down. Luisa gets played and played and played and played.

As the story progresses, the sick feeling permeated the air around me. I was putting off ÔÇ£wavesÔÇØ of fear, watching Luisa go through events that no doubt would break most. SheÔÇÖs really one of the most damnable women. At times sheÔÇÖs so foolishly na├»ve and I love that she tries to make the best of her circumstances. But being in a highly emotional state means she makes nothing but bad decisions. It takes her to a place ( emotionally and physically) where she may almost never be able to come back from. But sheÔÇÖs somehow resilient and perseveres.

With Karina HalleÔÇÖs books IÔÇÖm awestruck in that with every one I dive into I find her characters and storylines to be so diverse. Not one of her stories feels like any of the others. WhatÔÇÖs more, she made me love a drug lord and cry over his heartbreak. She made me root for him to get the girl. And, she gave me a female character to put on my bad-ass female characters list. Dirty Promises and the entire Dirty Angels series is not one to miss and it comes with an ending so good I had to read it twice! 5 ++ Stars with book and series recommendation
