She vowed never to return.
To save her brother from financial ruin, Piper Harland must do the one thing she swore sheÔÇÖd never doÔÇöreturn to the tiny island home-town where Ryan ÔÇ£WestÔÇØ Westlake crushed her heart. Piper is tough, resilient and a little wildÔÇömuch like the remote and beautiful Stewart Island where she grew up. As a cop whoÔÇÖs part of the elite New Zealand Police National Dive Squad, bringing the dead back to their families still doesn't stop the guilt she feels over her fatherÔÇÖs drowning death. Now nine years later sheÔÇÖs obligated to return to a hostile community as the outsider, and forced to work with the man who was once her best friend and first lover.
SheÔÇÖs a risk he canÔÇÖt take.
West is an Island man, through and through. As owner of the local pub, he lives and breathes the local community, and sure as hell canÔÇÖt imagine living anywhere else. But most of all he refuses to ever fall for a woman like his flighty mother. He lost Piper once to give her the chance to fulfil her dreams of becoming a cop. But now sheÔÇÖs back for an unexpected six week visit to help her brotherÔÇöhis best mate. Maybe West wants her a little bit, maybe he canÔÇÖt resist the temptation to tease and touch her, but can he fall in love with such a flight risk?
Saying goodbye the second time might just destroy them both.
In the first installment of the Due South trilogy, we meet Piper and Ryan ÔÇ£WestÔÇØ Westlake.┬á He was her brotherÔÇÖs best friend and the great love of her life.┬á That is, until he shattered her heart nine years ago.┬á Her world fell apart and Piper knew she couldnÔÇÖt stay in Oban.
Piper is a tough cookie.┬á She is riddled with guilt and is trying to find ways to make the world (and maybe herself) hurt just a little less by being a member of the dive squad.┬á She hasnÔÇÖt gone home since she left, trying to avoid the hurt and pain.┬á But, re is no closure for her.┬á In neither the loss of her father nor in the heartbreak handed to her by West.┬á Watching a proud woman who has run from her family and all things familiar step up to help when her brother Ben is in a pickle is amazing.┬á ItÔÇÖs the first crack in that sky-high wall she has erected.
West, oh delicious and tormented West.┬á He has taken over the running of the family Pub, and is quite content to stay on Stewart Island.┬á Even though he let Piper go, she still gets to him.┬á He canÔÇÖt get away from her.┬á She is washing dishes at the pub, staying at his house and will be the dive guide while he skipperÔÇÖs her brotherÔÇÖs boat.┬á Maybe he wants just a little taste to remember how good it could be with Piper.┬á Sometimes you just canÔÇÖt fight what is meant to be.
Alvarez takes you back and forth between PiperÔÇÖs and WestÔÇÖs view points, letting you explore each character a bit more as they navigate the choppy waters churning between them.┬á As much as they try to deny it, they are drawn to each other like a perfectly matched set of magnets.┬á The pull is strong and neither time nor distance can alter the strength of their attraction.
West is a dreamy, stubborn, sexy and fun addition to my list of book boyfriends.┬á In fact, IÔÇÖm going to add him to the top ten, in fact!┬á I was so drawn to this story, the dynamics of the characters, their struggles and perceptions.┬á You canÔÇÖt help to cheer them on and rejoice when they find their happiness.
5 happy ending stars to this great book!
