On the waves of the North Atlantic, a poison spreads, sapping the life from humans and striking madness into immortals.

Patrick Murphy, the immortal leader of Dublin, has been trying to stem the tide of Elixir washing into his territory, but nothing seems to stop the vampire drug. While others in the immortal world work to cure the creeping insanity that Elixir threatens, Murphy has been invited to London to join a summit of leaders hoping to discover who is shipping the drug. If Murphy and his allies can cut off the supply, they might be able to halt the spread long enough for a treatment to be found for the humans and vampires infected.

Anne ODea, Murphys former lover, retreated from public life over one hundred years ago to help immortals in need and to heal her own broken heart. Though powerful connections keep her insulated from the violence of vampire politics, even Anne is starting to feel the effects of Elixir on her isolated world. The human blood supply has been tainted, and with Annes unique needs, even those closest to her might be in danger. Not just from infection, but Annes escalating bloodlust.

When Anne and Murphy are both called to London, theyÔÇÖre forced to confront a connection as immortal as they are. As they search for a traitor among allies, they must also come to terms with their past. Behind the safe facade of politics, old hungers still burn, even as an ancient power threatens the fate of the Elemental World.

The Scarlet Deep by Elizabeth Hunter is a beautiful, emotional tale of forgiveness, betrayal and loveÔÇöall wrapped into paranormal awesomeness.

Whenever I want a good paranormal read, I turn to Elizabeth Hunter’s books, knowing that they will wow me with their creativity, originality and breathtaking storytelling.

It’s no different with The Scarlet Deep. Elizabeth Hunter created a passionate, poetic story filled with beauty and sensuality. The story is not just suspenseful and captivating, but erotic in an understated way. It’s very classy, sophisticated, yet extremely sexy.

Part of the Elemental World series, The Scarlet Deep carries us off into the world of vampires. Sexy, smart, at times dangerous vampires, who deal with very human problems: Love, lies, a broken heart, disappointment and all the other fun stuff that feelings bring along.

Anne and Murphy are a prime example. Two vampires, who used to be madly in love until they were just mad – at each other as well as themselves.

But despite hurt feelings and betrayal, they haven’t forgotten each other or stopped longing to be with one another – even after decades apart.

Now that they have to work together to stop a threat – both to human and vampire lives – they are forced to confront their own mistakes and to set their priorities straight. With both of them being passionate and bullheaded, things don’t always go smoothly. But sometimes the things that require the most work, are the ones that are truly worth it.

The story but also the characters have blown me away.

Ann is an amazing female lead. She’s strong, confident and classy. Despite a tragic life as a human and a challenging one as a vampire, she’s not bitter or mean. Instead, she’s caring, thoughtful and sweet, although a bit reserved and careful. But that comes with the secret she’s been hiding from most of the world, except a select few. What made her even more awesome for me was that she had weak moments. Moments in which she was vulnerable, made mistakes and failed. Yet, she didn’t let those moments define her. She owned her mistakes, learned and moved on – becoming stronger and wiser. Her strength also didn’t stop her from being feminine and sensual. It all blended together into an extremely likeable character. It’s no surprise she had Murphy wrapped around her little finger.

And Murphy is not an easy man to win over. He’s calculated, goal-oriented and ambitious. No one can fool him or best him in his business ventures. He’s a strict leader to his employees, but at the same time he’s also caring, ready to give his last to ensure their safety and well-being. But he’s also a man full of passion and love for the life he’s living and for one woman – Ann. I love how he was the perfect mix of possessive, protective and manly man. But he also had no issues admitting his mistakes and apologizing or showing his emotions. It made him irresistible and not just to Ann.

The chemistry between Murphy and Ann was off the charts, as was the sexual tension. The story had turns and twists that made it really suspenseful. I loved every single moment of this read.

What made it even better was some old friends showing up. And yes, I do mean Carwyn. This vampire makes my heart go to mush.

If you love paranormal romances, this book is a must.
